Democratic former state Rep. Sean Shaw has announced he will run for the countywide Hillsborough County Commission seat on the 2024 ballot.
Brother Shaw, 45, of Seminole Heights, is a lawyer who has specialized in insurance consumer protection after serving as state Insurance Consumer Advocate under former state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink of Tampa.
He served one term in the state House from 2016-18, and then ran unsuccessfully for state attorney general.
A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Florida law school, Shaw is the son of the late Leander J. Shaw Jr., the first African-American Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court.
“I got a lot of calls and you have to listen when you get some of those calls,” Shaw said of his decision to run.
Shaw said he intends to file by Feb. 1. He likely will have support from Sink and other prominent local Democrats.
